What is a pip?
A pip ("percentage in point") is the standard smallest price move in a forex pair — the 4th decimal place for most pairs (0.0001), or the 2nd decimal for JPY pairs (0.01). If EUR/USD moves from 1.1050 to 1.1051, that's one pip.
How is pip value calculated?
Pip value = pip size × position size (units). One standard lot is 100,000 units, so on EUR/USD: 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 units of the quote currency (USD) per pip. If your account currency differs from the quote currency, it's converted at the current exchange rate.
Why does my account currency matter?
Pip value is first calculated in the pair's quote currency (the second one). If that isn't your account currency, it has to be converted — which is why this tool asks for the rate when they differ. When they match (e.g., a USD account trading EUR/USD), no conversion is needed.
How do I use pip value to size a trade?
Decide your dollar risk and your stop distance in pips, then choose a lot size so (pips × pip value) equals your risk. Our position size calculator and position sizing guide walk through it.
Educational tool only. Pip values are calculated with standard formulas; for cross-currency conversions the result depends on the exchange rate you enter, and your broker's exact figure may vary slightly with spreads and rounding. Not financial advice. Trading involves substantial risk of loss.
